Perham fifth at Jackie Mann Invitational

The Perham gymnastics season kicked off with the 15th annual Jackie Mann Invitational at the Hive on Dec. 1. It was the first gymnastics meet in the new Perham High School gymnasium and it was a familiar face coming home with the title.

The defending Class A champion Detroit Lakes showcased why they are the early favorite to win another championship as they finished first by more than five points. Detroit Lakes ended the season-opening event with a score of 147.95 points, while Cambridge-Isanti was second with 142.85 points. Maple Grove came in third place, followed by Watertown-Mayer in fourth and in fifth place was Perham. The Yellowjackets finished with 137.65 points.

The Yellowjackets feature a mix of youth and experience and it showed during the event. The season-opening event gave the Yellowjackets a good mark to start the season. It’s one of the rare events that allows gymnasts to speak with the judges after each event to find out what they need to add or work on with their routines.

Cambridge-Isanti’s Char Mork was the individual all-around winner. She finished with a score of 38.15. Detroit Lakes’ Cora Okeson with a 37.60. Perham’s Jada Olsen finished third with a score of 37.20. Detroit Lakes’ Ellie Hultin was fourth followed by Maple Grove’s Nadia Abid.

Perham’s Kassidy Kovar came in 11th place. Kovar finished with a score of 33.65. Brittney Lorentz came in 14th at 32.65.

Olsen earned a pair of first place finishes on the vault and the bars, while she was fifth on the floor and 15th on the beam. Olsen finished with a 9.65 on the vault and a 9.55 on the bars for first place honors.

Kassidy Kovar led the way for Perham on the beam. She finished with an 8.60 for 14th place. Olsen led the way for Perham on the floor as well. She finished with a 9.40.

Perham’s best event was the floor where they finished with a 35.2, which was the fifth best score on that apparatus. Perham finished with a 34.6 on vault, a 34.4 on bars and a 33.45 on the beam.

The Yellowjackets will have plenty of practice time before their next competition. The Yellowjackets travel on Dec. 15 when they compete at the annual St. Cloud Tech Invitational.

Jason Groth

 Groth is a Minnesota Newspaper Association award-winning Sports Editor of the Perham Focus and the Wadena Pioneer Journal. Groth worked in Grand Rapids as the Sports Director at KOZY/KMFY radio for two years and prior to that he was the Sports Editor/Writer for the Grand Rapids Herald-Review for seven years.
